Layer 2 Scaling Solutions

Polygon, Arbitrum, Optimism — कैसे ये Ethereum को 100x cheaper और faster बनाते हैं।

Lesson 4 of 87 min

Ethereum mainnet expensive है — एक transaction $5-50। Layer 2 (L2) इसी problem को solve करते हैं — same Ethereum security, 100x cheaper transactions।

Concept: L2 networks process transactions off-chain, periodically Ethereum mainnet पर results post करते हैं। Multiple txns batch करके gas costs share होती हैं।

Top L2s:

Polygon (MATIC) — Most Popular: - Indian founders (Sandeep Nailwal, Jaynti Kanani, Anurag Arjun) - TPS: 7,000 - Fees: <$0.01 - Type: Sidechain + Plasma + zkEVM rollup - EVM-compatible: yes - Indian availability: all exchanges - Best for: gaming, NFTs, retail DeFi

Arbitrum (ARB) — Largest by TVL: - TPS: 4,000 - Fees: $0.05-0.20 - Type: Optimistic rollup - EVM-compatible: yes - DeFi protocols: most major (Uniswap, Aave, etc.) deployed - Best for: serious DeFi users

Optimism (OP) — Public Goods Funding: - TPS: 2,000+ - Fees: $0.05-0.20 - Type: Optimistic rollup - EVM-compatible: yes - Notable: retroactive grants ecosystem - Best for: DeFi, NFTs

Base (Coinbase L2): - Coinbase-built - Type: Optimistic rollup (built on OP Stack) - Growing rapidly - Best for: easy onboarding from Coinbase

zkSync Era — Zero-Knowledge: - Type: ZK Rollup - Fees: very low - Privacy benefits - Newer, less mature

StarkNet — STARK-based: - Different technology stack - Programming in Cairo - Growing but smaller ecosystem

Comparison:

| L2 | Type | Fees | TVL | Best for | |---|---|---|---|---| | Polygon | Sidechain+ZK | <$0.01 | High | Retail, gaming | | Arbitrum | Optimistic | $0.10 | Highest | Serious DeFi | | Optimism | Optimistic | $0.10 | High | Public goods | | Base | Optimistic | $0.05 | Growing | Coinbase users | | zkSync | ZK | $0.05 | Growing | Privacy-focused |

Optimistic vs ZK Rollups (technical):

Optimistic Rollups (Arbitrum, Optimism): - Assume transactions valid by default - 7-day "challenge window" — anyone can dispute - Withdraw to mainnet: 7-day wait - Faster, simpler

ZK Rollups (zkSync, StarkNet): - Mathematically proof of validity - Instant finality - Withdraw: 1-24 hours - More complex, future-proof

Indian context — practical L2 use:

Most Indians should use Polygon: - Indian founder connection (relatable) - Lowest fees - Best for small amounts (₹1,000-10,000 transactions) - Most major Indian exchanges support Polygon withdrawal

For larger DeFi: Arbitrum (more liquidity)

How to use: 1. Buy ETH or USDC on Indian exchange (CoinDCX, etc.) 2. Withdraw to MetaMask, choose Polygon network 3. Pay ~₹2 for transaction 4. Use any Polygon-deployed app (QuickSwap DEX, Aave, etc.)

Bridges: Move assets between L2 ↔ Mainnet: - Native bridges (Polygon Bridge, Arbitrum Bridge) - Third-party (Hop, Across, Stargate) - Cost: $5-30 typically

Tax implications: Bridge transaction = swap (taxable event according to most CAs)। Each bridge = entry in Schedule VDA। Track carefully।

Common mistakes: - Wrong network selection — funds lost - Bridging back and forth unnecessarily (fees + tax) - Using mainnet for small txns (uneconomical)

Future trend: L2 dominance growing। 2026 में most user activity L2s पर — mainnet primarily L2 settlement के लिए।
