The Merge और Ethereum Proof of Stake

September 15, 2022 — crypto history का biggest planned upgrade। Ethereum mainnet ने अपनी consensus mechanism Proof of Work से Proof of Stake में switch की। "The Merge" इसे called गया क्योंकि execution layer (existing mainnet) और consensus layer (new Beacon Chain) merge हुए।

Why The Merge?

1. Energy concerns। Pre-Merge Ethereum: 100+ TWh/year electricity — country-sized consumption। Critics ने attack किया environmental concerns पर। Post-Merge: 0.01 TWh/year। 99.95% reduction।

2. ETH issuance reduction। PoW में miners को daily ~13,000 ETH issued होते थे। PoS में validators को सिर्फ ~1,700 ETH/day। Supply growth dramatically कम — sometimes deflationary।

3. Staking yields। Stakers को rewards मिलते हैं participating के लिए। Users को directly Ethereum network से passive income earn करने का option।

4. Future-proofing। PoS से future upgrades (sharding) easier — scalability roadmap unlock।

How Proof of Stake works:

Validators (vs miners) network secure करते हैं। Validate transactions, propose new blocks, earn rewards। Requirements: - 32 ETH stake (currently ~₹2.5 crore at $3K ETH) - Run validator software 24/7 - Slashing risk: malicious behavior → ETH penalty

Validator economics: - Annual yield: ~3-5% on staked ETH - 32 ETH × 4% = 1.28 ETH/year (~₹3.2 lakh) - Less hardware/electricity vs PoW mining - More accessible than mining (anyone with 32 ETH can validate)

Staking options for Indian users:

1. Solo staking (32 ETH required)। - Maximum decentralization - Full rewards (no fees) - Run own node, technical setup - For technically inclined or significant holders

2. Pooled staking (any amount)। - Rocket Pool: minimum 0.01 ETH - Lido: any amount - Both 90%+ of rewards passed to stakers - Validators run by professionals; you stake portion

3. Liquid staking। - Lido (largest): stake ETH → receive stETH (liquid token) - Use stETH in DeFi while earning staking yield - Trade-off: smart contract risk

4. Exchange staking। - CoinDCX, Binance India offer ETH staking - 3-4% APY (slightly lower due to platform cut) - Convenient: no setup - Counterparty risk: exchange holds your stake

Slashing — important risk।

Slashing = validator misbehavior पर ETH penalty। Causes: - Double-signing (proposing two blocks simultaneously) - Going offline for extended periods - Equivocation (conflicting attestations)

Penalty: 0.5-100% of stake। Solo validators most at risk। Pooled staking platforms generally handle this professionally।

Indian context — ETH staking:

Tax treatment (critical): - Staking rewards = "income from other sources" at receipt time FMV - Section 56 के तहत 30% + 4% cess - Each reward (typically daily) = separate taxable event - Sold staked ETH later = additional Section 115BBH on gain over basis

Example math: - Stake 1 ETH worth ₹2.5 lakh - Annual reward: 0.04 ETH worth ₹10,000 (at receipt FMV avg) - Tax on rewards: ₹3,120 (31.2%) - Net staking yield post-tax: ₹6,880 = 2.75% APY (vs 4% gross)

Vs traditional FD: FD 6-7% (taxable at slab rates), ETH staking 4% (taxable at 30%)। FD often better risk-adjusted for Indian investors — unless you specifically want ETH exposure with passive income।

Should Indians stake ETH?

Pros: - Passive yield on existing ETH holdings - Indian exchanges (CoinDCX) make it easy - Helps Ethereum decentralization

Cons: - Tax complexity (each reward a taxable event) - Locked period considerations (was 1 year+ pre-Shanghai upgrade; now flexible) - Counterparty risk if pool/exchange-based

Recommendation: अगर आप already long-term ETH hold कर रहे हैं, staking makes sense (passive yield on idle asset)। ETH purely staking के लिए buy मत करो — Indian tax math FD से unfavorable है।

Future Ethereum roadmap: - Sharding (data availability scaling) - Verkle trees (statelessness) - Account abstraction (better UX)

Merge पहला step था — Ethereum aggressive upgrades पर है। Investors को expect करना चाहिए continuous evolution।
