Yield Farming और Risks

Yield farming DeFi का most aggressive earning strategy है। "Farm" means: complex multi-step strategies highest possible yields कमाने के लिए। पर higher yields = higher risk, हमेशा।

Concept: Stake LP tokens में additional protocol tokens earn करो। Layer rewards: trading fees + protocol incentives + (sometimes) governance tokens।

Real example: 1. Provide ETH + USDC liquidity to Uniswap → earn 0.3% trading fees 2. Take LP tokens, stake in Sushi farm → earn SUSHI tokens (incentive) 3. SUSHI tokens stake in Sushi single-asset pool → earn xSUSHI (compounding) 4. xSUSHI stake in Yearn vault → earn auto-compounded returns

Layers compound: theoretical 50-100% APY।

Famous yield farming era — DeFi Summer 2020: - Compound launched COMP token rewards - Yields exploded — sometimes 1000%+ APY - "Liquidity mining" gold rush - Most farms eventually crashed (token prices fell, yields normalized)

Current realistic yields (2026): - Established protocols: 5-15% APY - New protocols: 20-50% APY (high risk) - "Insanely high yield" protocols: 100-1000% APY = SCAM or unsustainable

The "real yield" question:

Nominal APY misleading है। Need to check: - Token reward sustainability (will protocol survive?) - Token price (if reward token drops 80%, APY meaningless) - Impermanent loss in LP - Gas costs - Tax

Real yield calculation example: Protocol shows 60% APY। - 30% from trading fees (sustainable) - 30% from token incentives (token price drops 50% in year) - Effective: ~30% from fees + 15% from token (after price decline) = 45% - Impermanent loss: -10% - Gas costs: -2% - Indian tax: -31.2% on yield - Net real yield: ~22%

Still decent, but not "60%" as advertised।

Major risks:

1. Impermanent Loss। Detailed in next lesson। LP में price divergence से token value < holding alone।

2. Smart contract hacks। Yearn Finance ($11M), bZx ($55M), Cream ($130M) — yield farming protocols hack-prone।

3. Rug pulls। Unknown new protocols developers token देकर liquidity withdraw कर लेते हैं।

4. Token price decline। Farming reward tokens often inflation-heavy — supply increases → price drops।

5. Composability risk। एक protocol fail = chain reaction (UST collapse 2022 = $40B wipeout)।

6. Regulatory risk। SEC/CFTC could classify yield farming returns as securities।

7. Gas cost destruction। Frequent rebalancing = ₹500-2000 per transaction on mainnet।

Red flags (avoid): - APY > 100% on stablecoin pools - Anonymous team - No audit - TVL growing too fast (< 1 week) - Heavy referral/MLM incentives - "Risk-free" claims - Promises of guaranteed returns

Established yield farming protocols (relatively safer):

Yearn Finance: - Auto-compounds across various strategies - Audited extensively - Conservative approach - 5-15% APY typically

Convex (CRV): - Boosted Curve farming - Stablecoin-focused - 5-20% APY

Lido + DeFi: - Stake ETH → stETH → use in lending/farming - Multiple layers safer

Indian context — yield farming risk-reward:

Most Indian investors should AVOID yield farming because: 1. Tax: हर harvest = taxable event। 50 harvests/year = nightmare 2. Gas: Polygon ok, Ethereum mainnet uneconomical 3. Complexity: requires daily monitoring, technical knowledge 4. Risk: 50% loss possible in single hack 5. Better alternatives: FD, ETH staking simple, BTC SIP

If you must: - Start with established protocols only (Yearn, Convex) - Polygon network for low fees - Small amounts (< ₹50,000) to learn - Track religiously for taxes - Hire CA if doing seriously - Never put money you need

Bottom line: Yield farming sophisticated trading है yield को maximize करने के लिए। Most "passive income" claims overstate reality। Indian retail के लिए simpler strategies (BTC/ETH long-term, exchange staking) better risk-adjusted returns देती हैं।
